What is Jewish Embodiment?

Embodiment is our way of being.

It’s how we are formed, how we move through the world, and what we express through our actions and behaviors.

Jewish Embodiment is both rooted in and an expression of Jewish wisdom, identity, spirituality, culture, and values.

The work of Jewish Embodiment helps us to more fully align our actions with our intentions, to better understand ourselves and others, and to build communities of wholeness and belonging.

What does this look like in practice? Jewish Embodiment cultivates the experience of Jewish life & learning through our bodies. Practice typically invites us into the physical sensations of the body.

A couple more things about embodiment …

Mitsui Collective exists within a rich ecosystem of Jewish embodiment. We hope here to share a sense of how we understand this work, developed through collaborative learning, sharing, workshopping, and feedback from a range of embodied Jewish practitioners and teachers. It certainly does not and could not represent the entirety of what Jewish embodiment is. We are grateful for the partnership and contributions from our friends and colleagues, and stand upon the shoulders of all who have done this work before us.

We first heard the phrase “people of the body” from our dear friend, colleague, and faculty member Kohenet Keshira haLev Fife, who is oft to refer to our Jewish community as people of the book, people of the body, and people of the earth. It is also the title of a compilation edited by Howard Eilberg-Schwartz.
